Ingredients:
1 pie pastry (top and bottom) (the Pillsbury kind are amazing....they taste like they are from scratch...no one will know the difference...seriously) ALSO (let the pastries set out while you are cooking the rest...you do not want them to be fresh out of the cold and directly in the over....room temperature is best!)1/2 cup unsalted butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon Vanilla
1/2 Tablespoon Cinnamon
1/2 Tablespoon Nutmeg
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup granulated brown sugar (packed will work just as fine but granulated tastes better)
8 small Granny Smith apples or 4 to 5 large ones - peeled, cored and sliced
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Stir in flour to form a paste. Add water, white sugar, brown sugar, Cinnamon, Vanilla, Nutmeg and bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and let simmer. 2. Place the bottom crust in your pan. Fill with apples, not overflowing...but just enough to start a little mound. Poor the cinnamon/sugar mixture over the apples. (Save some of the mixture about a fourth cup). Cover with a lattice work crust, or you can plop the top pastry on as is! (It is just as good).
3. Bake 15 minutes in the preheated oven (425 degrees). Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees, and Continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft.
4. Put the 1/4 cup cinnamon/sugar mixture in the microwave for 20-30 seconds, stir, and then poor over top of the pie.
Just try it! It is time consuming, but I promise that you will have raving fans!
